Abstract

The sensitivity of optical performance monitoring with optical preamplification is analyzed. It is found that the requirement of noise performance for the preamplifier is much more stringent in monitoring cases than that in optically preamplified receiver cases. The gain requirements for the two cases, however, are similar. With sufficient gain, the sensitivity is roughly that of the corresponding shot-noise limit plus the penalty of the noise figure of the optical preamplifier. The noise specification of the preamplifier that allows for the preamplified schemes to outperform non-pre-amplified schemes is also provided.
