Call for Papers: Reliability Issues in Optical Networks

The rapid growth of IP and multimedia services is driving demand for capacity in the long-haul transport network and, subsequently, in other parts of the network. The use of optical fibers and optical network components makes networks more scalable and allows for higher capacity links, which minimizes required equipment for transmission and switching. In this way, however, the robustness of the network to transmission failures is decreased. The consequence of higher capacity links is that more traffic will be affected by a single failure. It makes the reliability and fault management aspects of optical networks of great importance in attempting to introduce photonics in a broader context in the networks.

Furthermore, the current evolution of the information society is relying more than ever on the availability of an efficient communications infrastructure. Common connection availability requirements are 99% to 99.999% (five 9s). Five 9s correspond to a connection downtime of less than 5 minutes per year.

The Journal of Optical Networking (JON) is soliciting papers for a Feature Issue addressing all aspects of reliable components and systems for optical networks and the concepts, techniques, and experience leading to high availability of services provided by optical networks.

Scope of Submission

The scope of the papers includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Basic methods and theory for survivable network design and operation
  • Survivable network architectures (protection and restoration)
  • Availability analysis and comparisons of basic schemes for survivability
  • Differentiated availability schemes
  • Design for multiple quality of protection (QoP)
  • Different schemes for on-demand survivable service provisioning
  • Network reliability and availability
  • Real-life accounts or data on failure and repair rates or projected values for use in availability analysis
  • Survivable service provisioning in domains of optical transparency: dealing with signal impairments
  • Optical components and systems reliability
  • Architecture and reliability of network nodes
  • Reliability performance evaluation (analytical, simulation, experimental)
  • Reliability measures and guarantees, cost-performance analysis
  • Quality-of-service (QoS) aspects, network resource management, and traffic engineering
  • Multilayer interactions
