The Pennsylvania State University Journal of Optical Networking (JON) invites
submissions to a special issue on optical wireless communications, free space
optics, or laser communications. We are beginning to witness an exciting era for
researchers and developers of optical wireless communications; optical wireless
technologies have already expanded their presence into a broad range of traditional
communications markets. New approaches and challenging opportunities are opening up
in nontraditional areas such as hybrid optical/radio diversity; optical multi-input,
multi-output (MIMO) for the next-generation optical WLAN; and extreme applications
such as short-range communications over distances of a few millimeters (e.g. "smart
dust") to millions of kilometers in missions to both the Moon and Mars. In its early
forms optical wireless has been used for remote communications for well over a
thousand years. Today optical wireless links have succeeded in penetrating our homes
and our daily lives, yet little attention has been given to this "invisible" but
increasingly important technology. Optical wireless products ranging from TV remote
control to IrDA ports currently have a worldwide installed base of over 200 million
units with a 40% annual growth. Optical wireless is also widely available on
personal computers, peripherals, embedded systems and devices of all types,
terrestrial and in-building optical wireless LANs, and intersatellite link
applications. This special issue seeks to highlight the ongoing research in this
important area. Original manuscripts are solicited on related issues. Topics of
interest include (but are not limited to): Link layer, network and transport
protocols and modeling Short-range communication by network of sensors Laser
satellite communications Terrestrial optical wireless communication ("last-mile
solutions"), Quantum encryption using optical wireless communications, Indoor and
outdoor links Indoor and outdoor channel modeling (aerosols and turbulence, Pointing
error statistics). Manuscript Submission. To submit to this special issue, follow
the normal procedure for submission to JON, indicating "OWC feature" in the
"Comments" field of the online submission form. For all other questions relating to
this feature issue, please send an e-mail to jon@osa.org, subject line "Optical
Wireless Communications." Additional information can be found on the JON website:
