Parallel Optical Interconnects Submodule Using Silicon Optical Bench

Abstract

A compact integrated optical submodule for the application of 40 G parallel short reach optical interconnects systems is demonstrated. The submodule utilizes a silicon optical bench to integrate all optical components and to realize passive fiber array alignment enabled by high-precision silicon processing technologies. The submodule is capable of transmitting and receiving data at 40 Gb/s rate up to a few hundred meters using multimode fibers. This production-ready platform can be scaled to 100 Gb/s and beyond.
