Feature Announcement for Biomedical Optics Express

Optical Molecular Probes, Imaging and Drug Delivery

Submission open: 1 May

Submission Deadline: 15 June 2015

Biomedical Optics Express is planning a feature issue on "Optical Molecular Probes, Imaging and Drug Delivery," associated with the OSA topical meeting of the same name to be held as part of the Optics in the Life Sciences Congress in Vancouver, Canada, 12-15 April 2015. The guest editors include Chairs of the conference Paul French and Peter So and Program Chair, Irene Georgakoudi. The feature issue will contain papers based on oral and poster presentations from the conference. While meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, this special issue is open to all contributions, particularly those reporting recent advances in this rapidly evolving area with a goal of stimulating new ideas toward novel strategies for molecular probe development, site-specific drug delivery, monitoring treatment response, and clinical translation of optical technology to improve diagnosis or treatment of diseases.

Topics of interest for the feature issue include:

  1. Optical visualization/detection of biomolecular processes and pathways
    • Photoacoustics and advanced microscopy techniques such as quantitative phase imaging, multiphoton, SHG, FRET, FLIM, SRS, pump-probe and CARS
  2. Reporters and contrast agents for fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging: endogenous and exogenous.
    Genetically introduced proteins
    • "Smart" molecular probes
    • Nanoparticle probes
  3. Advanced optical molecular imaging instrumentation for assays and pre-clinical models of disease
  4. Novel tools for image data analysis and reconstruction
  5. Optical monitoring of specific delivery, localization, and action of drugs and contrast agents including PDT
  6. Quantitative validation methods for optical molecular imaging
  7. Multi-modal molecular imaging techniques
    • Photoacoustics and combinations of optics with MRI, X-ray, radio-diagnostics
  8. Clinical translation of optical molecular imaging, spectroscopy and image guided therapy

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journal. To be eligible for publication, the papers need to add substantial and/or significant new information to the original conference summary. Normal Biomedical Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles.

Manuscripts should be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Biomedical Optics Express (see: style guide) and uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system: (https://prism.optica.org). All submitted manuscripts will go through the normal peer review process of the journal.
