Abstract

The DC arc is a versatile source of excitation for the emission type spectrograph and is widely used by spectroscopists. It is particularly useful for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of slags and other refractory materials. Especially for quantitative work, the stability of the source is important. However, while sources and controllers of excellent performance can be assembled quite cheaply, very little information on such equipment has appeared in the literature. This paper reviews the design of a source and three controllers that have been used successfully in various laboratories.
