Abstract

Since the resolution and sensitivity of a mass spectrometer are affected by the position of the mass spectrometer tube unit (hereinafter referred to by the term MSTU) in the magnet gap, the exact alignment of this unit is critical. When the MSTU of the 21-102 Consolidated mass spectrometer is properly aligned in the magnetic field, the circular analyzer tube lies in a plane parallel to and equidistant from the magnet pole faces, and concentric with their circle. The usual procedure for placing and aligning the MSTU in the magnet gap is described elsewhere (1) and it suffices here to state that the process may at times be both time consuming and tedious.
