Interest in several regions of the electromagnetic spectrum has increased
greatly since the War under the stimulation of new apparatus for the generation and
detection of radiation. Just as the perfection of the magnetron and the klystron has
given the spectroscopist relatively powerful sources of radiation in well defined
frequency ranges of the microwave region, so the invention of the lead sulfide
photoconductive cell has provided him with a detector for the near-infrared which is
considerably superior in most respects to those he had known heretofore.
