D. C. Arc Stabilization with Magnetic Rotation

Abstract

Many attempts have been made to utilize the effect of a rotating magnetic field to control a d. c. arc. For the most part this effect has been employed to collimate the light rays to give uniform slit illumination. Myers and Brunstetter used a rotating horseshoe magnet at right angles to the arc column to achieve this effect. Cave employed an electromagnetic system controlled by photo cells to keep the arc centered. While endeavoring to repeat this earlier work, the authors observed that the magnetically rotated arc gave an even temperature gradient over the sample containing electrode as well as a collimation of the light.
