Abstract
Optical fibers and fiber bundles are widely used as sampling systems in Raman spectrometry. The probes are convenient and easily adapted to remote sampling, and can be used in a hostile environment if necessary. The most common designs are bundles of two or more fibers, in which one fiber is used for illumination and the other(s) for collection of scattered light. Such designs are susceptible to contamination. The cements used to hold the fibers in place can absorb many organic materials. In time small cracks can develop in the probe structure, and serve as capillaries which take up any liquids.
