Abstract

With the increased use of coal for electrical power generation as well as for synthetic gaseous and liquid fuels production, there has been speculation that a windfall in valuable metals might result from the processing of vast quantities of coal. Copper, tin, iron, and other metals have been mentioned as elements that may be recoverable in significant amounts from coal. Germanium is another one of the valuable metals which may be recovered economically from coal resources. Germanium is an important component of transistors, diodes, and other electronic devices. It occurs in coals in varying concentrations from 1–20 μg/g, though some isolated samples have been found to contain as much as 1% Ge.
