Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis Studies of Some Glycine Complexes of Zirconium and Aluminum

Abstract

A series of zirconium and aluminum salts, several of which contain glycine (HGly), have been investigated using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). Of particular interest was a commercial antiperspirant active, designated ZAG (U.S. Patent Nos. 2814585, 2854382, and 3792968), which is a hygroscopic, amorphous powder containing zirconium, aluminum, glycine, and water. In aqueous solution. ZAG exists as a heteropolymer of unknown structure. The ESCA spectra of powdered samples of ZAG and of several related materials were obtained to help elucidate the structural chemistry of ZAG, especially with regard to the mode of binding of the glycine component.
