Abstract

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) has shown great promise as a technique for obtaining Raman spectra of samples in fluorescent matrices. Moreover, the high conversion efficiency of the technique means that analytical signals are strong and data acquisition rates can be, at least in principle, fairly rapid. However, CARS suffers from two serious experimental problems. The first is the presence of a large, broadband nonresonant background signal, which is often the ultimate limitation to sensitivity. The second problem is that the angle at which the pump and probe laser beams must intersect is a function of the dispersion of the sample. To obtain good CARS signals one must adjust the beams to near the optimum crossing angle.
