Abstract
Although resonance Raman spectra have been reported for a wide range of inorganic and organic compounds, the latter including important biological materials, no results are available for one potentially interesting group of substances, polycyclic aromatic hydro-carbons. Presumably the fact that with these materials the Raman exciting wavelength also produces strong visible fluorescence has proved a considerable practical problem. The work now reported has been concerned primarily with methods for suppressing this fluorescence and also with the choice of the optimum exciting wavelength, because a preliminary series of measurements showed that this is also an important factor in achieving a good signal/noise ratio. During the course of this limited study sufficient results have been obtained to suggest that the resonance Raman spectra of this group of compounds offer interesting analytical possibilities.
