Card Coding of Spectroscopic Data

Abstract

The proliferation of small computers and time-sharing terminals has made mechanical card sorting systems virtually obsolete for spectroscopic information retrieval. The card format restrictions imposed by mechanical systems make the data cards difficult to process in many computers and require "throwing away" a great deal of valuable data in the coding process. Laboratories planning to code and store spectroscopic data on cards should rocognize that these cards will be read only to generate secondary tape or disk files for computer processing. Therefore, the one-card-per-compound format should be abandoned and a more flexible one such as that shown in Fig. 1 adopted.
