Abstract
In the course of an investigation of adsorbed water, and hydroxyl groups, we wished to obtain near-infrared spectra from silica powders. Although it was clear that diffuse reflectance techniques would satisfy our requirements, no combination of spectrometer and reflectance accessory suitable for use in the range of principal interest (1–3 μ) was available to us. Because we had access to a Cary Model 14 RI spectrophotometer, it seemed most reasonable to consider modification of the reflectance accessories available for this instrument. The purpose of this note is to describe the approach adopted, the results achieved, and the possibilities of improving the system further.
