The usual standard aspirator and sample burner assemblies of atomic absorption spectrophotometers are designed to be adjusted by simple manual rotation or elevation of the supporting shaft. The shaft is then held in place by tightening a set screw. To achieve maximum sensitivity it is necessary to align the burner slot parallel to, and in the center of, the sample beam. The edge of a white card is held manually exactly vertical and in the exact center of the burner slot, first at one end of the burner and then at the other while raising or lowering and rotating the assembly. This method requires an assistant to achieve good alignment and is time consuming. The authors have designed an adjustment rack that adapts to existing burner assemblies to permit very accurate and rapid alignment to be carried-out by only one person.
