Abstract
The attenuated total reflectance technique produced infrared spectra that are comparable to those obtained by the transmission technique if consideration is given to the choice of a prism material. The material should be selected on the basis of the refractive index of the sample. The ratio between the refractive index of the sample and that of the prism will define a range of incident angles within which spectra can be obtained. Outside of thus range, spectra will either be weak or show the distorting effects of refraction.
