Abstract

The development of many new methods for isolating micro-quantities of substances has emphasized the need for infrared microanalysis. The most common technique is the incorporation of the sample into a potassium bromide micropellet, using a beam condensing system with the spectrophotometer to concentrate the radiant energy on the sample. However, it is often more desirable to obtain spectra of microsamples in solution. In this laboratory, the fractionation of low-temperature coal-tar samples by various methods, followed by infrared spectrophotometry, has frequently demanded a rapid technique for obtaining solution spectra of micro-samples. This problem was solved with a holder designed for positionig a liquid microcavity cell into a 6x beam condensing unit in the infrared spectrophotometer.
