Hydroxyl Number of Alkyd Resins By Infrared Spectrophotometry

Abstract

The long digestion period for acetylation in the chemical determination of the hydroxyl number of alkyd resins, which often caused inconvenient delays in processing, necessitated the development of a rapid procedure to effect this analysis. An attempt to establish a fast, accurate, reproducible, control method for this determination led to the investigation of an infrared technique to accomplish this. The method described below meets all these criteria. Hydroxyl numbers as determined by the infrared method agree within ± 3.0 units of the hydroxyl number as determined by the chemical method and were obtained in 15 min as opposed to the 2 to 4 hr necessary for the chemical determination.
