It is desirable for the purge air of optics of an infrared spectrometer to be free of CO<sub>2</sub> as well as water so as not to lose energy in the CO<sub>2</sub> absorption region. This is presumed to be done by a commerical instrument company, using activated alumina to remove CO<sub>2</sub> as well as water. The use of a regenerative desiccant has the advantage over reagents such as soda lime since the alumina is reactivated cyclically to remove the CO<sub>2</sub> as well as water. It is the purpose of this paper to show which common desiccants are useful in this respect.
