Emission Spectrographic Determination of Metallic Impurities in Powdered Boron

Abstract

A spectrographic method of analysis has been developed for the determination of eleven elements, in specified ranges, in powdered boron. Samples were converted to the oxide with H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> and nitric acid to permit the determination of greater percentages than those listed by proper dilution of the sample with pure boric oxide. The method showed an average error of estimate of ±13.6% with a maximum of ±16.6 and a minimum ±10.6 Samples from various manufacturers gave a coefficient of variation for the impurities ranging from 6% to 15%.
