This paper presents a part of the work being done at the Research Staff of General Motors Corporation to determine the applicability of recent scientific information to the procedures of spectrographic analysis of low alloy steel under conditions of receiving inspection. The desired method is one which makes use of the point-to-plane technique and gives accurate results even though the submitted samples have wide variations in size, shape, and metallurgical history. A previous paper described the selection of line pairs. This paper describes our investigations as to the function of an air jet blown through the analytical gap and its value in increasing the reproducibility and accuracy of analytical results.
