Flame-Photometric Determination of Dissolved Solids in Water

Abstract

The flame photometer has been successfully applied to the direct determination of 30 to 45 p.p.m. calcium, 5 to 15 p.p.m. magnesium, 5 to 20 p.p.m. sodium, and 1 to 2 p.p.m. iron in water. Because iron and magnesium determinations are affected by the presence of calcium and sodium, calibration standards were prepared to contain different amounts of one ion in the presence of fixed amounts of the other three. Based on repetitive analyses of three synthetic and three natural samples, repeatability is about 0.1 p.p.m. when an oxy-acetylene flame is used. No sample preparation is needed and a complete analysis takes 30 minutes.
