Semiquantitative Spectrochemical Analysis Using Spex Standards

Abstract

To outsiders it is paradoxical and often annoying, but true nevertheless: The closer an analyst knows the composition of an unknown sample beforehand, the faster and more accurately he can analyze it. In spectrochemical analysis, as in all secondary methods of analysis which depend on the use of standards, this is especially true. Tell a spectrographer that an unknown is 24S aluminum and he will analyze it very quickly and accurately. If the material turns out to be a different alloy, analytical time will double and the accuracy may suffer, too. If a spectrographer proceeds without knowing anything about the unknown, the analytical time is increased enormously and results may stray far from the actual composition.
