Abstract

It is well known that anhydrous lithium nitrate, LiNO3, is one of the lithium salts which contain LiO6 octahedra in their crystal structures. By considering the 6Li-7Li isotopic effects, Tarte reported the Li—O infrared bands for many inorganic lithium salts and suggested that the LiO6 valence frequencies are expected below 300 cm−1, in the region which was not studied. The Raman and infrared spectra of crystalline LiNO3 have been reported by various authors for the compounds with natural abundance only, and the Li—O modes assigned to the infrared bands at about 320 and 280 cm−1 This assignment has been confirmed by the normal coordinate analysis.
