Abstract

Recently, lithium tetraborate fusion of mineral and plant ashes has become popular in preparing samples for both x-ray and optical emission spectroscopy. Lithium tetraborate fusion of soils, geological material, refractories, slags, and other silicates largely solves the problem of crystal and particle size differences and transforms such samples to homogeneous materials. Lithium tetraborate is especially suitable for x-ray emission spectroscopy, because lithium and boron have low atomic numbers and their absorption edges do not interfere with the emission lines of elements to be determined.
