Abstract

In this paper, we present a gas refractometer based on an open cavity optical fiber Fabry–Perot interferometer. The Fabry–Perot cavity is fabricated by sandwiching a short section of preprocessed side hole fiber between two single-mode fibers. A chemical etching process creates a side-open cavity through which gas can enter and leave freely. By tracking the wavelength shift of the fringe pattern, the measurement of the refractive index change of nitrogen can be realized. The experiment results show the gas RI sensitivity is up to 1290nm/RIU.
