Easy to use, extended depth of field in high lateral resolution Gaussian beam illumination Optical Coherence Microscopy (OCM)? This hard to achieve, yet very necessary for broad implementation of OCM requirement, has motivated numerous research groups for years resulting in presentations of several alternative solutions to the depth of field extension quest, relying on computational or optical/hardware-based depth of field extensions. Gabor domain OCM (GD-OCM) is one of the hardware-based solutions, which successfully implements a dynamic focus acquisition scheme allowing to maintain a high lateral resolution over a large imaging depth. In the latest paper from Panomsak Meemon, Yutana Lenaphet, and Joewono Widjaja, the authors report on further improvement of GD-OCM by the development of a FPGA implementation of the spectral domain GD-fusion. As a result, an easy-to-use and efficient method of automatically fusing images of the tissue acquired at different focal spot positions has been demonstrated and tested. The processing time for linear wavenumber calibration and spectral Gabor filtering steps was improved with FPGA implementation, encouraging further development and eventual "field deployment" of the proposed solution.
