Feature Issue of Applied Optics

Radiography, Applied Optics, and Data Science (ROADS)

Submission Opens: 1 June 2021

Submission Deadline: 15 October 2021

Applied Optics welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "Radiography, Applied Optics, and Data Science (ROADS)" in conjunction with the Digital Holography and Three-Dimensional Imaging, special session on Tomography and Radiography Imaging, which will take place virtually on 19-23 July 2021. Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, the feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

Data and information science, including quantum information science, have breathed new life into radiography in the last decade. Traditional X-ray, charged particle, and neutron radiography R&D have been driven by medicine, non-destructive testing, and security applications. The latest thrusts of growth come from machine vision and additive manufacturing. Space colonization may soon place radiography technologies beyond the Earth's horizon, if they have not already been deployed there. DH3D Imaging Congress and Applied Optics provide an excellent forum to bring together leading experts and new comers alike, and to jointly explore the synergies among visible light, X-rays, protons, neutrons and other forms of illumination in radiography, imaging and applied optics. A special issue based on the first TRI meeting will not only provide valuable records of the new results, invited mini-reviews on status of the field, it will also promote further growth of the interdisciplinary field.

The special issue will cover all aspects of tomography and radiographic imaging (TRI) and the connection to applied optics. It will include different sources of penetrating illumination such as energetic photons, protons and muons, tomography and radiographic image formation and underlying principles, detection methods of the images, image data processing and information reduction, and existing and emerging applications such as non-destructive testing, additive manufacturing, computed tomography (CT).

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Data science & Machine learning for TRI through e.g., digital twins
  • Detectors and instrumentation for TRI
  • Emerging applications such as additive manufacturing, TRI in space and satellites
  • Emerging light & particle sources for TRI
  • Industrial CT, non-destructive testing (NDT)
  • Medical CT, dose minimization
  • Muon & lepton radiography
  • PET, antimatter TRI
  • Physics & Principles of TRI
  • Proton & hadron TRI

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journals. The standard Applied Optics publication charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see Optica Publishing Group's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Applied Optics and submit through Prism's manuscript submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue Radiography, Applied Optics, and Data Science (ROADS).
