Feature Issue of Applied Optics and Journal of the Optical Society of America B

Laser Interaction with Materials (HPLA)

Submission Opens: 1 May 2021
Submission Deadline: 1 June 2021

Applied Optics and Journal of the Optical Society of America B welcome submissions to a feature issue on "Laser Interaction with Materials (HPLA)" in conjunction with the 2021 International High Power Ablation Symposium being held virtually on 13-15 April 2021. The journal welcomes submissions only from the oral and poster papers accepted for the meeting.

Laser-materials interaction is the fascinating nexus where laser physics, optical physics, and materials science intersect. Since 1998, the International High Power Laser Ablation Symposia have provided a unique forum for exchange of ideas on the physics and application of high power laser-materials interaction, including advances in relevant high power laser sources and problems of beam propagation and detection.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Beamed Energy Propulsion and Thermal Coupling in Laser and Microwave Propulsion Problems
  • Biological Applications of Lasers
  • Burst Ultrafast Laser Machining on the GHz Forefront
  • Laser-Enabled Scientific and Societal Applications
  • Fundamentals of Ultra-Short Laser-Materials Interactions: Theory, Simulations, Experiments and Technology Developments
  • High-Power Lasers in Directed Energy
  • High Power, Ultra-Short Pulse Lasers: Applications in Materials Science and Particle Acceleration
  • Laser Ablation for PLD and MAPLE
  • Lasers in Additive Manufacturing
  • Laser-Induced Modification of Material Microstructure and Surface Morphology
  • Laser-Induced Shock Applications
  • Laser Systems for Precise Orbital Measurement and Traffic Management of LEO Debris
  • Panel: The Business Side of High Power Beam Applications
  • Time-Resolved Imaging and Probing of Ablation Plumes and Material Transformations

Authors may choose between Applied Optics and JOSA B when submitting to the joint feature issue, but should recognize the differences between them and select the appropriate journal. The guest editors may recommend transferring a manuscript to the other journal as needed. Applications-oriented papers will be directed to Applied Optics and papers slanting more toward optical physics will be submitted to JOSA B. Papers will appear in their respective journals. Additionally, a combined table of contents of papers from both journals will appear once all papers are published.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journals. The standard Applied Optics and JOSA B Publication Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see OSA's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Applied Optics or JOSA B and submit through OSA's electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on Laser Interaction with Materials (HPLA).
