Applied Optics' Engineering and Laboratory Notes

Engineering and Laboratory Notes (E&L Notes) are brief articles that feature the laboratory techniques and hands-on skills required for the design, analysis, fabrication, integration, alignment, and measurement of optical components and systems. E&L Notes offers a unique way to publish observations from your engineering notebook in Applied Optics.

Topics suitable for submission include:

  • tips for optical design, tolerancing, and review
  • best practices for data acquisition, reduction, and analysis
  • techniques for assembling, aligning, and characterizing optical systems
  • methods to integrate optical systems with mechanical, electrical, or other external systems
  • measurement techniques and methods that validate system alignment
  • patent descriptions and approvals

Submissions will be reviewed in accordance with Applied Optics' process. Acceptance criteria for these articles will focus on the utility of the techniques described, the scope of their application, their appropriateness for Applied Optics as well as their overall clarity and correctness. Submissions are not limited in page length but are expected to be short—about 1,500 words and 5 figures.

Applied Optics encourages supplementary materials for E&L Notes such as videos, 2D image files, 3D solid models, infographics, and tabular data. References to externally hosted design files from optical design programs, files from data acquisition and analysis software, and routines from programming environments are also encouraged.
