Coupling light from an optical fiber into a silicon-based photonic integrated circuit by means of a grating coupler has become an important new method with distinctive advantages. Conventionally this coupling works best if the fiber is not perfectly vertical to the chip, but at an angle of typically 10 degrees. This is a complication from a packaging point of view. Here a new method is proposed and demonstrated whereby the fiber has an angled facet and is vertical to the chip.
