Thermal Limitations in Optical Logic

Abstract

The problem of removing the heat produced in logical operations limits the density to which logical elements can be packed in large computers employing many elements. The basic minimum power dissipation in elements that use optical phenomena to perform logic operations is estimated from physical laws. A maximum packing density or, alternatively, a minimum propagation delay between elements can then be estimated.
