Nitrous Oxide Supported Flames for Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract

The propane–butane–nitrous oxide flame and the mixed acetylene–nitrous oxide + air flame have been evaluated for use in atomic absorption spectroscopy. Various parameters such as burning velocity and flame temperature gradients, as well as sensitivity and interference measurements, have been studied. The propane–butane–nitrous oxide flame has specific application to analyses in which freedom from interference is more important than sensitivity. The mixed acetylene–nitrous oxide + air flame is more promising as the envisaged universal flame. It affords a sensitivity high enough for refractory elements. As the temperature may be adjusted to any required value, interference effects are virtually overcome in many instances.
