Designed and cast by NBS employees, this sundial was dedicated to the Directors of the National Bureau of Standards and presented to NBS three years after the retirement in 1945 of Lyman J. Briggs. It has recently been relocated on the grounds of the Bureau’s new Gaithersburg laboratories.

The Joint Session on the Unification of Screw Threads, held at the National Bureau of Standards on 18 November, 1948, marked the culmination of the technical development of a common screw thread standard for Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The session was attended by delegations from Government and industry of the three nations involved. Shown signing the Accord, Edward U. Condon, Chairman of the Interdepartmental Screw Thread Committee of the United States and director of the National Bureau of Standards, who acted as co-chairman of the Session, and Hume Wrong, Ambassador of Canada.
