Abstract

The HITRAN 2000 database of infrared line transitions has been used to calculate the dispersion coefficient of water vapor at room temperature in the atmospheric window up to 25 μm, confirming an equivalent earlier compilation [Infrared Phys. 26, 371 (1986)]. I complement this line set by using an previously published ultraviolet pseudospectrum [J. Chem. Phys. 68, 1426 (1978)] to improve coverage of the near infrared. The effect of admixtures of abundant nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide is predicted on the same calculational basis to synthesize the air representative of the mountain that hosts the Very Large Telescope Interferometer and is found to be small compared with the dominant role of water at wavelengths above 3 μm.

Fig. 1

Solid curve, dispersion of a gas mixture of water (density of 1023 molecules/m3) and CO2 (density of 7.076 × 1021 molecules/m3) calculated from the HITRAN database; dashed curve, dispersion of the pure water vapor (1023 molecules/m3).

Fig. 2
Fig. 2

Solid curve, calculated water-vapor dispersion at N m = 1023 molecules/m3. The isolated open squares near 3.4 and 10.6 μm are Matsumoto’s data8,9 scaled to the same molecular density; the dashed curve is the Hill-Lawrence fit.25

Fig. 3
Fig. 3

Solid curve repeats the calculation of Fig. 2 and adds more gas species: N2 at a density of 1.49 × 1025 m-3, O2 at 3.84 × 1024 m-3, Ar at 1.786 × 1023 m-3, CO2 at 7.076 × 1021 m-3, Ne at 3.44 × 1020 m-3, CH4 at 3.06 × 1019 m-3, O3 at 2.23 × 1018 m-3, and CO at 1.91 × 1018 m-3. Crosses are wet air according to Ciddor’s34 Appendix B.

Fig. 4
Fig. 4

Continuation of Fig. 3 into the range 6 μm ≤ λ ≤ 22 μm. CO2 bands near 15 μm separate two windows of high transmission through the Earth’s atmosphere that astronomers call the N band (7.5–14.5 μm) and the Q band (17–25 μm).

Isolated square, Table I of Bradley and Gebbie.10 Solid curve, calculated humid air at a total pressure of 833.3 hPa (821.0-hPa dry air components plus 12.3 hPa or 2.97 × 1023 m-3 water). Dashed curve, calculated 821.4-hPa dry air plus 11.9-hPa water, which is a 3.3% change in water content relative to the solid curve chosen to visualize the 3.3% error estimate in Table I of Ref. 10. Dotted line, calculated 833.3-hPa dry air.
