Modification of a Jarrell-Ash Ultraviolet Monochromator to an Infrared Duochromator

Abstract

A modification is described of a Jarrell-Ash model 82-000 ultraviolet grating monochromator to an infrared two-channel spectrometer which proved to be useful for simultaneous observation of two wavelength intervals by fast response In–Sb detectors in shock tube experiments. The principal concept for the conversion was to use a shorter focal length for the focusing mirror together with a 150-grooves/mm grating resulting in a linear dispersion of 23.1 mm/μ at 4.5 μ. The optical components added for the modification (commercially available flat, spherical, and ellipsoidal mirrors) are inserted as a separate unit into the instrument, so that it can be used also in its original version. A calibration example is given for a particular application requiring simultaneous observation of two spectral intervals centered at 4.25 μ and 5.07 μ, respectively.
