Optical Frequency Translator Using Two Phase Modulators in Tandem

Abstract

An optical frequency translator which uses two phase modulators in tandem is described. These phase modulators can be constructed in the traveling wave configuration using KDP so that wide bandwidth operation is attainable. Whether or not the wide bandwidth capability is used, this crystal orientation yields a great reduction in the drive power. Theoretically this frequency translator converts 33% of the input light to the offset frequency. Other frequency components are generated also.
