Abstract
Present-day line emission spectroscopy has been assisted through modern, high-resolution spectrometers and better detection methods. This, together with the degree of line broadening found in present-day thermonuclear and arc research, results in a new order of precision in line-shape determination. When the mathematical model is known and when it is unfeasible to scan the line because of mechanical or power throughput limitations, a direct method of determining line shapes is given. This method requires only the opening of a slit or slits and a recording of the signal. Slit-broadened line energy measurement approximations are justified for the three common types of line-broadening.
