Abstract
A brief account is given of the association of the Rayleighs (John W. Strutt and Robert J. Strutt) with the establishment of the National Physical Laboratory and its subsequent development up to 1939. Lord Rayleigh (J.W.S.) took a crucial part in the negotiations, originating from actions taken by the British Association, which resulted in agreement by the Government to the setting up of the Laboratory on 1 January 1900. Lord Rayleigh’s influence upon the development of the Laboratory as chairman of its Executive Committee is traced up to his death in 1919. His son was chairman of the same committee from 1932 to 1939.
