Analysis of Fine-Detail Reproduction in Photographic Systems

Abstract

It has been shown that large-area tone-reproduction data and cascaded modulation-transfer data are adequate information to predict fine-detail reproduction in a negative–positive photographic system under optimum printing conditions. For poorer printing conditions, waveform reproduction can only be computed by a sequential analysis of the optical (modulation transfer function) and sensitometric (D–log E) transfer characteristics of each step in the photographic process. The method of analysis is described in the present paper, and it is shown that, for a variety of hypothetical negative–positive systems, the optimum reproduction of fine detail is obtained when the negative material is developed to a low gamma.
