Abstract
Much has been written about solar energy and its use over the last twenty years. In this Business Technology column, reprinted by permission from The New York Times of 4 October 1989, a method of harnessing the sun now operating in the California desert and feeding electricity into the Southern California Edison System, is discussed. Regular readers of this column will recall some years back another discussion of a method, with mirrors, of destroying the enemy’s fleet; see Appl. Opt. 12, A14 ( Oct. 1973) and Appl. Opt. 13, A14 ( Feb. 1974).
