Abstract
In this paper we describe a study of penumbral imaging which examines the SNR advantage of the technique as well as the influence of various factors that will affect the practical implementation of the technique. These include noise, errors, and uncertainties in the camera geometry and the three-dimensionality of the object. The technique is shown to be very tolerant of the errors that may reasonably be expected. The discussion is primarily in the context of the application of penumbral imaging to laser-produced plasma research.
