Abstract
The use of perturbation theory for determining the eigenvalues and eigenvectors (characteristic mode shapes) of nearly uniform coupled waveguide arrays is examined. The method has relevance to large waveguide arrays, for example, phase-locked array lasers, where the exact solution may be difficult to obtain. The results are compared to the exact solution of the eigenvalue problem, and, where possible, simplified results are derived for the effects of particular perturbations.
