Fringe contrast variation in hologram interferometry with the numerical aperture of the viewing system

Abstract

Rigid body displacements are examined. The contrast variation of the fringe pattern with the aperture stop of the viewing system is analyzed for lateral and longitudinal displacements, in-plane rotation, and tilt. This analysis is made by considering a mathematical relationship of the interference between the real and the holographically reconstructed wave fronts, which are reflected from a rough surface before and after rigid displacement. This equation gives the intensity distribution on the image plane of an optical imaging system focused on the reflecting surface. From the analysis of this relationship it is shown that, using the same arrangement, fringe contrast variation with the aperture stop radius of the optical system is different for different types of movement. Contrast reversal of the fringe pattern is obtained for some values of the numerical aperture of the viewing system. Experimental results are given.
