Abstract

This paper describes a method of detailed analysis which we call the polarized image overlay technique. The two images for study are projected onto a suitable screen through polarizing filters, and these superimposed images are then viewed through a third polarizing filter. This procedure allows a dynamic comparison of both large features and fine details. It was developed during the course of our studies of photographs of the Shroud of Turin but is applicable to a variety of fields.
