Abstract

A ray-tracing program is developed for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with integral lenses that calculates the total coupled power into a 50-μm core fiber. The calculations are performed for three wafer thicknesses (100, 150, and 200 μm) and various parameters, such as the radius of the lenses, the lens–fiber distance, the lateral displacement y0 of the fiber, the lateral displacement of the active area, and fiber tilt. The data show that alignment tolerances are relaxed considerably for lensed LEDs compared with flat surface LEDs.
