Abstract
A new method is proposed for smoothing computed tomographic (CT) images considerably degraded by Poisson (signal-dependent) noise in the projection data without blurring sharp edges. The method uses homogeneity information of the immediate area around a given point to obtain a smoothed value at this point. The information is obtained from the points selected in the area according to given criteria. The method produces good CT images containing sharp edges that are in the form of circles bounding a uniform gray level area.
