Abstract

An input scanner based on laser technology is described that is utilized to scan cards or documents and generate digital video signals. Scanning at 18.9 lines and 18.9 pixels/mm (480 lines and pixels/in.) with a He–Ne laser, video data are generated at either 3.8 Mbit/sec (slow speed) or 11.5 Mbit/sec (high speed). Material to be scanned is placed on a platen and transported via a linear dc motor past a laser beam. A controller terminal allows setting of scanner functions and initiates data acquisition.
